Joshua Friedman Aspire Counseling Group

Joshua Friedman, LCSWA

Joshua Friedman (he/him) is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker Associate who works with adults and couples. He completed his Masters in Social Work at UNC-Chapel Hill, and also holds a PhD in Cultural Anthropology from the University of Michigan. Josh is a therapist because he loves supporting people as they work to better understand themselves. He believes that therapy is where we can grow comfortable with all the parts of ourselves—even those that may feel the hardest to show. Understanding those parts can help us build compassion, connection, and the strength to face life’s challenges.

While Josh supports people from many different walks of life, he is especially drawn to work with men, parents, and people navigating conflict in romantic relationships. Josh is passionate about working with clients on life-transitions, identity exploration, anxiety, depression, attachment, relationship issues, gender and sexuality, loss and grief. He also loves supporting academics confronting the emotional challenges of their work. In session, Josh is committed to close-listening, offering a space where clients can feel safe, supported, and brave. His approach is relational and strengths-based, drawing on Internal Family Systems, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, as well as feminist, queer, ethnographic, and anti-racist theory.

In his free time, Josh loves to bike, cook, and spend time with his family. He also maintains a deep love of buffalo wings and ice cream.
